" As more and more start-up companies are founded every year worldwide, building up one’s own business does not get easier. Since 9 out of 10 start-ups fail, future entrepreneurs are well advised to take a look at potential reasons for failure and success. Learning from others’ mistakes and studying success stories can improve their own performance and help to avoid critical errors. But in addition, not only the entrepreneur needs to be analysed, beyond that the ecosystem represents an important factor for the success or the failure of the start-up.”

Whereas, the research about success factors in new venture creation has been done for quite some time (Song et al. 2008), there is only little evidence in relation to the failure of companies and its concrete indicators. Furthermore, there are concerns that focussing only on success factors isn’t the right way of how to create reliable outcome (Kieser and Nicolai 2002).

    Examples from Karlsruhe:

    Reposito (https://www.gruenderszene.de/allgemein/reposito-einstellung),

    Otego

    Bautique

    simQoo

    Pocket Taxi

    Store2be

    Best Fit

    Thesis:

Goal of this theses is to define, collect and analyse existing research literature about the key factors that determine the success or failure of start-up-companies in an ecosystem and which challenges need to be addressed in the future. Those findings need to be compared to real-life examples. Also, data needs to be extracted and analysed to precise the determinants and challenges of Karlsruhe.

    Method:

"Over two years we [Google HR] conducted 200+ interviews with Googlers (our employees) and looked at more than 250 attributes of 180+ active Google teams. We were pretty confident that we'd find the perfect mix of individual traits and skills necessary for a stellar team -- take one Rhodes Scholar, two extroverts, one engineer who rocks at AngularJS, and a PhD. Voila. Dream team assembled, right?

We were dead wrong. Who is on a team matters less than how the team members interact, structure their work, and view their contributions."

Since Edmondson (1999) the term Psychological Safety (PS) is often used when it comes to improve teamwork and team effectiveness. The factors that are leading to PS are depending on the individual. In this thesis the perception and the factors, which are leading to PS in two different cultures should be analysed.

Thesis:

Goal of this thesis is to define and compare the factors that are leading to Psychological Safety in Western cultures like Germany and Eastern cultures like China.

Method:

  • Systematic literature review
  • Qualitative Research
