Entrepreneurship in developing countries - A cross-national analysis of Costa Rica and Peru

Introduction

Entrepreneurship can be considered as a key factor to economy growth and social transformation. Research in the last years has shown that support from the entrepreneurial ecosystem is essential for entrepreneurial activities and most important for sustainable entrepreneurship (Cohen, 2006). In addition, the framework of an entrepreneurial ecosystem has a significant influence on the entrepreneurial success (Suresh and Ramraj, 2012).
The economies of developing countries in Latin America still depend mainly on natural recourses. In recent years first countries like Chile and Peru started to promote entrepreneurial activities supported by government funds. However, the entrepreneurial ecosystems are still very young and the situation for entrepreneurs is more than improvable. Therefore, the main task of this scientific work is to analyze the status quo as well as to identify the needs of the different actors. In the end, there should be recommendations how to build the framework of an entrepreneurial ecosystem so that it enables entrepreneurial activity in the most successful way.

Data Basis

- Conducted expert interviews with different actors (Founders, Investors, Researchers, Teacher and Politicians) from the entrepreneurial ecosystems of Costa Rica and Peru.
- Recent research on models of entrepreneurial ecosystems (Isenberg, 2010; Forster et al., 2014)
- Case studies of entrepreneurial ecosystems (Neck et al., 2004, etc.)

Methodology

- Systematic Literature Review (Kitchenham and Charters, 2007)
- Transcription of Expert Interviews
- Qualitative Data Analysis (Mayring, 2015)
- Case Study Research (Yin, 2017; Dul and Hak, 2008)
